Ceramic, underglaze. One of a kind. As much functional object as it is art.
Drawn straight from the dream-margins - sharks gliding through star fields, little water spirits, wandering moons and wayward comets. Each mug is illustrated by hand in deep cobalt over a soft cream glaze, so no two share the same constellation. The forms are gently wobbled and imperfect on purpose; you'll find the spot where your thumb wants to rest. Made to hold your morning ritual, your evening tea, or whatever potion the day calls for.
This piece features the salmon of knowledge, a figure in Irish mythology.
The Salmon of Knowledge story appears in The Boyhood Deeds of Fionn. As the story goes. an ordinary salmon ate nine hazelnuts that fell into the Well of Wisdom, gaining all the world's knowledge, and whoever ate its flesh would gain that knowledge in turn.
The poet Finn Eces fished seven years before catching it. He gave the salmon to his young servant Fionn mac Cumhaill to cook, warning him not to eat any. While turning the fish, Fionn burned his thumb on a drop of hot fat and sucked it to ease the pain - not knowing all the salmon's wisdom had concentrated in that single drop. When Finn Eces saw the new wisdom in the boy's eyes and learned what had happened, he gave Fionn the rest of the fish. Fionn gained all the knowledge of the world, which he could afterward summon by biting his thumb, and went on to lead the Fianna.
It also features a burning house, because, well, that's how things feel sometimes.
Glazed and fully food safe. Because every piece is painted individually, the one you take home is the only one of its kind in the world.
